KENDI MALING LOMBOK, THE MAIN TARGET OF FORIGN TOURISTS

Kendi maling is primarily a water jug. It has spouts on its side but having no handle on it. In order to have water filled in, we should hold its neck.  

The words Kendi Maling itself contains two words Kendi which means water jug and maling whily means stealing.
This water jug called kendi maling because of its uniqueness than other water jar.A "Kendi maling" is a special version that lacking a stopper is filled through a whole in the base where a hidden funnel keeps water from running out from the base when the Kendi Maling is in an up-right position.
The fact of filling in from bottom and pouring out on the top is the reason this special version of water jug called kendi maling ( stealing jug).

Kendi maling, historically was used by the king. The special design of filling the water from bottom was meant to avert of being poison through water jug from wicked intention. It's intriguely made concealed on the bottom so that people can't poison the water for not finding the hole on the top.

This famous handicraft of Lombok started to be well known to international level after modern technology around 1990's was used to make the jar.  Now kendi maling even already exported to european countries including australia.
