Yusril claimed capable to defeat mega wati and gusdur. This chairman of PBB party would have defeated megawati and gusdur in the head to head election of president in 1999. The recess of the country in the reformation era after the regime of soeharto, Yusril, megawati and gusdur contended as the president of the republic.
Yusril claimed that he would have been the 4th indonesian president at that time if he persisted to run for the president. He explained that he yielded his desire and allowing gusdur and megawati which finally won by the late president gusdur. Yusril added that the incondusive situation forced him to opt out from presidential run. Yusril preferred to maintain the unity thus have to renounce his desire not because of capable to compete with two left candidates.
To the media, yusril claimed to be supported by BJ Habibie who instructed his endorser to bolster yusril. According to the calculation of yusril, he had the big chance to be the president at the time of which he opted to withdraw.
This ex minister of law and defense minister explained his withdrawal in 1999 election in response to the statement of ahok. In issue of governor election of 2017, ahok claimed that yusril had the chance to run for president in 1999, unfortunately he knuckled under Gusdur who won the presidential run at the time.
Yusril who is also law practitioner will run for jakarta governor election in 2017. This means he has to fight with incumbent governor, ahok who always win the majority of public preference through credible surveys.
Yusril is much confident to win and looking at the opportunity as the stepping stone for him to run for next presidential election of the country.
