DANAU RANA TONJONG, SECOND LARGEST LOTUS LAKE OF THE WORLDDanau rana tonjong lake is recognized as the second largest lotus lake of the world. There are only there places in the world where this kind of rare lakes existing. the first one is located in india and the other one found in australia.


This unique lotus lake is located in nanga mbeling village, subdistrict of sambi rampas, east manggarai, flores exactly in the valley of pota. It's about 3 km from pota. This only one unique lake in indonesia has been hundred years in age. Near around the lake is the rice field of local people pota and the area of lake it self is surrounded by the trees.

Danau tonjong in local dialect consists of word danau means lake and tonjong means lotus. The proliferated lotus in this lake is specified  in nulembo lucifera species which is distinct from other species of lotus thus acknowledged to be rarely discovered.


This second largest lotus lake of the world is around 2.2 hectares in large and filled by numerous giant lotus. It's also the habitus for the frog, boa, fresh water fish, and egrets.
According to the local people, around 1900, a german scientist made research in the lake then concluding the lotus in
the lake to be a rare phenomenon existing only in 3 places of the world.

The lotus flourish throughout seasons of the year and will only blossom once a year around month april and may.
Once the lotus blossoms, it show such amazing spectacular view and also the best moment to visit.

The Uniqueness of Lotus in danau rana tonjong lake

The lotus found in rana tonjong lake is quite distinct than other species. Carefully observed, its petal is larger, regular and more taper than other species. There is seed inside its petal and it can remain for thousand years in certain condition. In china, it's discovered that lotus' seed survived for 1300 years.
The stem of lotus grows upward, likewise its flower raises upward too. 

In religion case, lotus is used for religion rites especially in Hindu and buddha. In china, gods are always described to be placed on the top of lotus flower. Furthermore, lotus symbolizes the purity, enlightenment and rebirth of religious people.

Benefit of Lotus

Lotus has manifold benefits for us. Its leaves can be used for decoration. Likewise its flower is very good for decoration purpose.
people believed that the seeds and roots of lotus can cure many disease. Every now and then, local people especially children get its seed to eat for they believe it to be very effectively curing the disease and contain high protein.

How to get there

There are many options to travel to this place like from ruteng city or borong city. If you happen to take the route from ruteng,  you will pass through reo than take a trip  to pota. From pota, it will be 2.5 km to danau rana tonjong lake or 10 minutes by motorcycle. 


If you start the trip from borong. You will pass through the middle route bealaing, lengko ajang, then pota. Through this route you will pass through 130 km which will be reached in 5-6 hours trip. It is advisable to use off road car since the road is so challenging and difficult through this route.

Less promotion of local government 
Despite of the discovery of danau rana tonjong as the second largest rare lotus of the world, this potential lake is still luck of promotion from local government. There is a necessary breakthrough of the government to withdraw the visitors especially the foreigner target. Nevertheless, some unique visitors to see this weird fact of the lake still come to this place. They will be guided by tour agency and also the local people for the detail explanation of the lake and the lotus itself. 
Realizing the potentiality of the lake, there is a call also from local government to bring the uniqueness of the lake for the potential visitors. District legislator of east manggarai, adven peding expected the cooperation of all sector to promote this potential tourism spot for the information is still lack even in the area of subdistrict itself.
