After the issue of raw sugar import, the businessman urge the government to haste 381.000 tons as signaled previously by the government. The businessman who are associated in food and beverage business association (GAPMI) postulated the urgency of raw sugar import to fulfill the refined sugar industrial needs.
Lack of sugar supply was claimed as the main reason since the failure of sugarcane farmer due to the unfriendly climate. This caused the harvest of sugarcane delayed to last march and april, meanwhile the demand of raw material sugar cane for refined industry is high. Though it was still under control due to the flat production number of industry, the lack of raw sugar disturb the industry too.
The Food and beverage association called for the prudent plan for sugar stock to the government so as to maintain the production plan of refined sugar industry. The government should anticipate long before and not seemingly plump in case of climate factor like this year. This is important to keep the industry going on production on track.
There are allegedly the conspiracy of importers causing the high price of sugar in the market. Vice Chairman of Market Merchants Association of Indonesia (LGAs) Ngadiran said that so far only allowed import of refined sugar for industrial use. However, he suspected the importers deliberately plays the price of sugar in order to obtain permission to import more. Ngadiran urged the commitment of government to stabilize the stock and price of sugar in the country. In case of lack of supply, there are suspected cases that worth to be investigated and fixed by the government including the possibility of import mafia especially for basic needs like sugar.
