What appears unusual then is arbitrary decision of merchant to increase the price without following the regulation and the appealing of the government. The difference of beef for instance, now during ramadhan Rp 110.000 to Rp 130.000 per kilo gram, meanwhile during ordinary days it is only Rp 70.000 to Rp 80.000 per kilo gram.
According to president jokowi, this price is far too high compared to the neighbor country which is only arund Rp 50.000 per kilo gram. The main cause of this high price is basically the limited stock of beef, the long distribution chain and the merchant who desires for definitely high profit. President
jokowi then promised to maintain the beef price around Rp 80.000 per kilo gram before the ramadhan to come. Yet until the first week of ramadhan, there is no hint if the beef price is to sink down.
According to business competition supervisory commision(KPPU), they insist to monitor on the available stakeholders especially the big companies involved in distribution chain. Those companies who aim for too high profit will be sanctioned accordingly or risk for annulment of their business. Meanwhile the small distributors will be only under the training and guidance of KPPU.
Soaring price of beef in ramadhan period is caused by the importir who intend for big profit. Consequently, the price of beef at the end user will be surely high since the long distribution chain from importir to retailer. The majority of beef imported from australia will be stocked in BULOG before distributed to the retailer.
So far, the president seems to foresee the digression in distribution chain. He orders the police in chief to inspect for the possibility of discrepancy of beef distribution thus makes the sudden high price of beef. Down to the core of the problem, unstabilization of basic needs price is only resolved by the initiation of government to use BULOG as logistic distributor. It is only through the effectiveness of BULOG to maintain the stock like beef, onion, rice especially during special moments like ramadhan or idulfitri.
